Why do we hoist flag on Independence Day and unfurl it on Republic Day?
Long back, national holiday only meant ‘rest’ from the normal office routine. I was too tired or I would say too lazy to get up from the bed and attend the regular society celebrations. Then came a time when I started getting involved in activities related to national holidays. I am not a soldier, hence I had to prove all the time, to everyone that I am also patriotic- I love my nation. I don’t have to wear a uniform or follow orders in order to pay tribute to my country. I follow traffic rules. I vote when required. I pay taxes. I am proud to say my company has given employment to many worthy
people. Indeed, I am a responsible citizen and further want to brag about it.
I happen to meet a gorgeous girl, decked up in tricolor attire from top to bottom yesterday in a supermarket. I couldn’t resist myself and rewarded her for the efforts she had taken to decorate herself. On asking her about Independence Day, she couldn’t speak much. Nevertheless, I salute her spirits.
Have you ever thought of the difference between the flags hoisted on Independence Day and unfurling it on Republic Day? Very true to your thoughts, India got freedom from the British on 15th August. The folded flag is tied with the rope which then moves upwards till the top end of the pole. The string is pulled, the flag unfolds-indicating the hoisting of the national symbol, declaring that the nation is free to hoist its own flag.
On Republic Day, the folded flag remains on the top of the pole. When the string is pulled, the flag unfolds and indicates that the free country is now ready to rule with its own guidelines and laws.
Happy Independence Day!
