What is Dining Etiquette?

We often see people eating in different manners at various gatherings or dinner parties, but what is the right way to do so?

Dining etiquette  refers to the way one behaves at the dining table. If you eat food keeping dining etiquettes in mind, it shows respect and consideration for others. It includes how one should sit while eating, how one should hold the spoon and fork, etc. It is basically a set of guidelines for behaving at the table in a respectful and courteous way. ➡️ Also watch video

Table setting is the first thing in dining etiquette. You should first know about the proper use of utensils, glasses and plates. Always start with the utensils on the outside working your way in with each course. ➡️ Watch video

You should place the napkin on your lap as soon as you sit at the dining table or let the waiting staff do so. After you have finished eating, wipe your face with the napkin and place the napkin unfolded to the left of your plate.

Cutlery includes how to hold the fork, spoon, and knife. British style requires you to hold the fork in your left hand and the knife in your right hand while cutting. Eating manners play a very important role in dining etiquette. Whenever you eat, always eat in small bites. Chew your food with your mouth closed and do not make loud noises while eating. You should If you want to talk while eating, swallow the food first and then talk.

Whenever you eat at the dining table, you should always pass the utensils from the right side. If you need something, ask the person next to you to give it to you rather than reaching out.

Always talk about positive things while eating, and avoid talking about controversial topics. Do not talk on the phone while eating, avoid any distractions and treat the people around you with respect.

Eat your meal slowly and finish at the same time as the host or hostess. After eating, you should always express gratitude to the waiter. However, if you are eating at someone’s home, you should express gratitude to him as well.

When you are invited to a party, you should toast properly. Make sure all the glasses are full before toasting. Clink glasses gently. Maintain eye contact while toasting.
