IELTS Listening Exam Tips

New Picture

The Listening section of the IELTS exam can be both challenging and rewarding, as it tests your ability to comprehend English Language in various contexts. With a variety of question types and the need to follow conversations or monologues, effective preparation is key to success. The more, the merrier… Practice different accents by understanding the difference pronunciation of words.

This section assesses not only your listening skills but also your ability to understand tone and specific details. By employing strategic techniques and practicing regularly, you can enhance your listening abilities and build the confidence needed to excel on the test day.

This guide by EDUFOLKS offers valuable tips to help you navigate the Listening section and maximize your band score.

Here are some effective tips to help you excel in the IELTS Listening exam:

  • Make sure your headphones are working. Raise your hand immediately if you have a problem. If loud speakers are used, make sure you can hear the recording. If you need the volume to be increased, inform them immediately by raising the hand.
  • Take a moment to glance through the questions before the audio starts. This helps you know what to listen for
  • Identify key words or phrases in the questions that will help you listen for specific information. Similarly, look for articles like ‘an’- this indicates the word will start with vowel.
  • Write down important details as you listen, especially numbers, names, and dates. Stay Alert as the speaker may change direction or clarify information.
  • Answers to question come in order question 1 and then question 2 and so on. If you miss an answer, stay calm and focus on the next part. It’s better to move on than to dwell on it. Don’t panic.
  • Focus on listening for answers and the hint word or synonyms rather than trying to understand everything. You win a point for each question you answer correctly.
  • Pay attention to how many words or numbers you can have for each answer. For example, “15 workmen” is one word and one number,” driving test” is two words. Read the instructions carefully and write the answer as per the given instructions.
  • You will be given 10 minutes after the recording has ended to transfer your answers to the answers sheet. For computer test, you will get two minutes. Always check for errors and spelling mistakes or if the answers are correctly marked or not.
  • It is advised to use all capital letters for paper based test in order to avoid any handwriting issue.

By implementing these strategies, you can enhance your listening skills and increase your chances of achieving a higher score in the IELTS Listening section. Good luck!
